Ewing, NJ... Pitcher Ashtin Helmer (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) tossed the second no-hitter of her young career as The College of New Jersey softball team remained undefeated in New Jersey Athletic Conference play by sweeping  Rutgers University-Camden on Tuesday afternoon at Dr. June Walker Field.

Helmer notched both wins, opening with an 8-0 triump, allowing no hits in five innings. She finished with four strikeouts and allowed only one runner to reach second base for her 12th straight victory. With the five scoreless innings, Helmer's earned-run-average dipped below one to 0.96.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lions came from behind to win 9-2 in seven innings. After going behind early, TCNJ rallied in the bottom of the 4th inning when 5 runs crossed the plate and the Lions never looked back. Helmer came on in relief in the second inning to help the Lions grab the win. With the sweep, the Lions have moved to 8-0 in the NJAC and 21-5 overall with the Scarlet Raptors falling to 2-6 in conference and 16-9 overall.

The Lions face their toughest test of the year this weekend heading to top-ranked Montclair State University on Saturday. Rutgers-Camden plays a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday hosting Briarcliffe College for a pair of games.

Game 1
TCNJ 8, Rutgers-Camden 0 (5 innings)
TCNJ took the lead in its half of the first and gave Helmer all of the run support she would need as senior Michelle Casale (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) doubled into the game in left and raced home when classmate Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) executed a squeeze bunt for a 1-0 advantage.

That lead doubled in the third for the Lions when freshman Christine Desiderio (Babylon, NY/Babylon) raced home on an infield single by junior Kristen Lake (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central).

TCNJ picked up two more runs in the fourth when Desiderio singled home a run and an outfield error allowed a second to cross the plate extending the advantage to 4-0.

Junior Nicole Brodbeck (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) padded that lead in the fifth with a three-run home run to left, while the Lions tacked on another run on eighth to end the game after five innings.

TCNJ had three players all go 2-for-3 at the plate as Brodbeck, Lake, and Desiderio each finished with that stat line.

Game 2
TCNJ 9, Rutgers-Camden 2
The Scarlet Raptors looked to turn the tables on the Lions in the second game jumping out to the early lead. Freshman Sam Shockey (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) singled in a pair of runs staking the visitors out to a 2-0 lead before the Lions even came to the plate.

TCNJ needed only a couple of batters to start chipping away at the deficit as senior Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She then swiped third and scored on a single up the middle by Hommen making it a 2-1 game.

The game was silent until TCNJ exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the 4th inning to take a commanding 6-2 lead. TCNJ sent nine batters to the plate in the game-changing inning with senior Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) knocking in two runs with a sizzling double to left center. Senior Michelle Casale capped off the inning with a RBI-double of her own before coming around to score the final run of the inning.

TCNJ added three more in the bottom of the 5th, loading the bases twice with Hommen knocking in two runs with a basesloaded single. Hommen went 3-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and Casale added two more hits as the Lions had 14 total for the game.

Helmer came on in relief and shut down the visiting Scarlet Raptors, giving up five hits and no runs over six and two-thirds.
