Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey field hockey head coach
Sharon Pfluger added another milestone to her impressive career as the veteran mentor became the second coach in Division III to reach 500 career wins as the Lions posted a 4-0 shutout over Cabrini College on Tuesday.
TCNJ scored three times in the opening the half and tacked on one more goal in the final frame putting Pfluger in elite company. Her 500 wins at the Division III level rank second all-time with a career record of 500-96-9. Pfluger trails only Messiah College's Jan Trapp, who earned 536 wins from 1973 to 2011. Pfluger's winning percentage of .835 ranks first among Division III coaches. In all divisions of NCAA competition, she is the seventh coach to reach the 500-win plateau. Paired with her 418 victories in lacrosse, she has 918 combined victories.
Pfluger is in her 31
st year as a head coach, with the last 29 coming at TCNJ. The Lions will shoot for victory number 501 on Saturday when they head to Juniata College.
She has also won eight NCAA Division III National Championships (1985, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1999, and 2011), advanced to the national semifinals 16 times, and has guided the program to five undefeated seasons.
The Lions quickly grabbed the early lead with junior
Lindsey Hatch (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) scoring her first goal in a TCNJ uniform 9:49 into the game. Hatch doubled that lead 5:57 later tipping in a blast from junior
Erin Waller (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.).
The margin increased to 3-0 with just over 10 minutes left in the period with Lion freshman
Jaclyn Douglas (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) netting her first collegiate goal. She tallied that goal when she knocked in a short feed from junior
Erin Healy (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan).
Senior
Sarah Cummings (Summit, NJ/Summit) put the finishing touches on the win with the lone goal of the second period. She netted her first of the season on a centering feed from sophomore
Jordan Calderone (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood).
In goal for the Cavaliers, senior
Genevieve Pauline (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) made a game-high 13 saves, while
Samantha LaMaina (Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) posted a pair of defensive saves.
A trio of Lion goalkeepers combined on the shutout with
Amanda Krause (Richboro, PA/Council Rock North),
Roisin Dougherty (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), and
Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) each saw time between the pipes.
