Late goal not enough as Lions fall 2-1 at Stockton

Sophomore Greg Perri scored his fourth goal of the season.
Box Score

Galloway, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's soccer team dropped its first game in nearly a month as they fell 2-1 at Richard Stockton College on Wednesday night.

A late goal in the final minute by sophomore Greg Perri (Florence, NJ/Florence Twp) made it a one-goal game, but there was too little time to stage a comeback. The Ospreys (5-2-2, 1-1 NJAC) tallied a goal in each half to net three points in the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings. The Lions fell to 6-2-1 and 1-1 in league play. It was their first defeat since a 2-1 overtime loss to Rhode Island College on August 31.

TCNJ was a mere 44 seconds away from being shut out for the first time this season, but Perri took a feed from junior Kevin McCartney (Old Bridge, NJ/St. Joseph's) and found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Richard Stockton struck first at the 19:40 mark of the match. Moments after a corner kick, Chris Katona took a feed from Pat Rafferty at the top of the box and put away his shot to give the Ospreys an early lead.

The score remained 1-0 over the next 60 minutes of play, but Stockton picked up a much-needed insurance goal in the 79th minute. Anthony Colofranson picked up a loose ball and punched it between the posts to make it a 2-0 game.

TCNJ put pressure on goalkeeper Bobby Varga throughout the game, but he turned back five shots for the win. The Lions outshot the Ospreys 18-11, including nine shots by senior Kevin Shaw (Brookside, NJ/West Morris Mendham). Shaw hit the post with nine minutes remaining and had five other shots on goal, but Varga was up to the task on each attempt.

Senior goalkeeper Aaron Utman (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) made three saves in the game. The assist by McCartney was his fourth of the season.

The Lions return home this Saturday to take on 17th-ranked Montclair State University. The NJAC match-up is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in TCNJ's Soccer Complex.
