TCNJ takes home opener 6-1 against FDU-Florham

Junior Victoria Martin picked up her first goal of the season in the win.
Box Score Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey field hockey team continued its mastery over FDU-Florham as the Lions posted a 6-1 win in their home opener on Saturday.

TCNJ (1-1) scored four times in the opening half to get rolling and have now won 24 straight against the Devils (1-2), with that streak beginning back in the 1998 season.

The victory was the 499th for veteran coach Sharon Pfluger as she is on the doorstep of becoming second coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the 500-win plateau. Pfluger, who is in her 29th season, would also be the seventh coach in all divisions to hit that milestone. The Lions will host Cabrini College on Tuesday, September 10 setting the program up for a historical night.

Junior Erin Healy (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) got the hosts off to a great start recording a natural hat trick in the 17:45 of the game. The first score came 2:11 into the contest as the forward deflected a shot from freshman Jaclyn Douglas (Malvern, PA/Great Valley).

Just over 11 minutes Healy made it 2-0, tipping in a blast from classmate Erin Waller (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) on a play that started on a penalty corner.

Healy got the hat trick with 17:15 left in the half poking in a rebound for a commanding 3-0 advantage.

That lead grew to 4-0 when sophomore Cortney Natalicchio (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) put in a rebound for her first goal of the season.

The Devils got one of those goals back with 6:20 remaining in the opening frame when Noelle Shirey (Pine Beach, NJ/Toms River South) had her shot tipped in by Alicia Theoret (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro).

The hosts added two more goals in the second half with junior Victoria Martin (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) cashing in on a feed from Waller, while sophomore Jordan Calderone (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) capped the scoring with an assist from Healy.
