William Paterson tops TCNJ on homecoming

Ewing, NJ ….. William Paterson University scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half to spoil The College of New Jersey's homecoming by collecting a 21-0 victory over the Lions on Saturday.

The win was the first for the Pioneers as they went to 1-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference and 3-4 overall, while TCNJ dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

The defenses took center stage in the first 30 minutes of the game, as teams combined for 151 total yards and 11 punts.

The Pioneers accounted for the only points in the first half when Anthony DiMarsico (Stony Point, NY/Suffern) took a direct snap and scooted 39 yards for a touchdown. Senior Robert Sinegra (Wharton, NJ/Morris Knolls) connected on the point after making it a 7-0 game. That touchdown came with 2:20 left before the half.

In the second half, William Paterson struck for two more touchdowns with both coming in the fourth quarter. The first came through the air when quarterback Austin Fellows (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass over the middle to DiMarsico.

TCNJ's defense came up with a big play to prevent the Pioneers adding another score when senior defensive back Chris Westenhiser (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) intercepted a Fellows pass at the Lion one-yard line.

Two plays later, however, William Paterson responded a key defensive play of its own when sophomore Jason Montalvo (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) returned an interception 17 yards for a score. Sinegra kicked extra points after both scores to account for the rest of the scoring.

Junior Brad Young (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) had a solid game on the ground for the Lions churning out 60 yards on 14 carries.

Freshman quarterback Trevor Osler (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) came off the bench for TCNJ in the second half and was a spark completing 6-of-11 passes for 67 yards.

Fellows directed WPU's offense with 142 yards and a touchdown through the air on 10-of-20 passing.
TCNJ linebackers Jeffrey Skomsky (Maple Shade, NJ/Paul VI) and Sean Kley (Titusville, NJ/Hopewell Valley) each finished with eight tackles each. Skomsky had three solo tackles, while Kley had a pair. Senior Thomas Masi (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) had a nice game, recording a pair of sacks.

William Paterson's freshman linebacker Joe Hernandez (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) led all players with 11 tackles (six solo) and added an interception.

The Lions are home again next Saturday against conference opponent Kean University, while the Pioneers travel to Morrisville State. Both games begin at noon.
