TCNJ and Catholic advance in NCAA Tournament



Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey and Catholic University each advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday by posting shutout victories.
 
The fourth-ranked Lions (20-1) started the day with a 4-0 triumph against SUNY New Paltz (15-7), as the host scored all four goals in the final 25 minutes of the game. The second game saw the seventh-ranked Cardinals (16-3) score once in each half to get past 19th-ranked Messiah College (15-7).
 
TCNJ and Catholic will meet in the third round on Sunday, November 16 at 1 p.m. in Lions Stadium. The winner of that game will advance to the national semifinals on November 22 in Lexington, VA.

The Lions erupted for four goals in a span of 10:11 in the second half to account for all of the scoring against the Hawks.
 
Senior Lindsey Hatch (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) got things going with 20:23 left in the second half, intercepting a New Paltz clearing attempt that resulted in her 30th goal of the season.
 
Less than three minutes later, sophomore Danielle Andreula (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) redirected a shot by Hatch extending the lead to 2-0.
 
The next two goals came just 94 seconds apart, with Hatch getting the first and senior Erin Healy (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) the latter. Sophomore Lexi Smith (Florence, NJ/Florence Twp.) earned an assist on Healy's goal.
 
In the opening period, both teams had chances in the final 10 minutes with Hatch getting the first. The senior forward got around the Hawk goalkeeper, but defender Colleen Roemer (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) stopped her progress to keep the game scoreless.
 
In the final minute of the half, TCNJ''s Shannon Cowles (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) made a nice defensive save on a scoring chance by New Paltz's Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East).
 
TCNJ goalie Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) made three saves to record her third shutout of the season.
 
In goal for the Hawks, junior Alayna Wageman (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) finished with 10 saves.

Box Score

Catholic scored once in the opening 10 minutes of the game and then tacked on an insurance goal in the closing minutes to get past the Falcons.
 
The Cardinals cashed in on a penalty stroke 8:03 into the game to account for the only goal of the first half. Senior Maura Campbell (Media, PA/Archbishop John Carroll) scored for Catholic after a Messiah defender was whistled for stopping the ball with her body on the goal line. That goal was Campbell's team-leading eighth of the season.
 
Sophomore Analisa Scott (Hershey, PA/Lower Dauphin) protected that lead in the final minute of the period when she stopped a flurry of Falcon scoring bids. Messiah had three shots from close range and Scott denied each of them.
 
In the second half, the Cardinals came within inches of making it 2-0 when Kim Hermann (Havertown, PA/Country Day Sacred Heart) got around the keeper and got off a short shot. Messiah defender Sara Brooks (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield), however, swooped in and cleared the ball away.
 
Catholic did get that second goal with 6:31 left in regulation as Kiera McGovern (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South) put in her own rebound extending the difference to 2-0.
 
Scott earned the win for the Cardinals making four saves.
 
In goal for Messiah, Carly Day (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) had three stops.
