The Lions played some outstanding defense to keep MSU off the board early in the game. With a runner on second base and one out in the third, Brooke Powers singled to left. Sophomore Christine Desiderio (Babylon, NY/Babylon) ranged to her left to field the ball and fired home to cut down the runner trying to score, as catcher Jamie Purcell (Nutley, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Academy) applied the tag for the out.

Senior Alex Carisone (Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) was stellar through the early innings. She scattered three hits and struck out a pair. With the Red Hawks threatening in the fourth with runners on second and third, Carisone got the batter looking at a called third strike to end the inning.

TCNJ came within inches of taking a 1-0 lead in the fifth. With two outs, Purcell lined a single to left and was pinch-run for by Nery Cerda (North Bergen, NJ/High Tech). Kristen Fitzsimmons (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) worked a full-count before drawing a walk. Lindsey Williams (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) legged out an infield singled to fill the bases. Kristen Lake (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) bounced a slow roller in front of home plate that pitcher Alex Hill picked up and flipped home. Cerda slid in, but was called out on the force in a close play at the plate.

In the sixth, Carisone retired the side in order. With a runner on first in the seventh, third baseman Jessica Kennick (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) speared a line drive and fired to first for the inning-ending double play.

The Red Hawks plated the only two runs in the top of the eighth as Alisha Cumberton and Hill each singled in runs, while Hill kept the Lions off of the board in the bottom of the inning.
