Collegeville, PA... The College of New Jersey field hockey team had its 27-game winning streak snapped as Ursinus College pulled out a 2-1 victory on Saturday.
Â
The loss dropped top-ranked TCNJ to 12-1 on the season, while eighth-ranked Ursinus climbed to 11-2. It was the first loss for the Lions since September 27, 2014.
Â
In a recurring theme for the Lions this season, they were able to get on the scoreboard first. Against the Bears, junior
Lexi Smith (Florence, NJ/Florence Twp.) got that goal when TCNJ took advantage of a penalty corner. Freshman
Taylor Barrett (Neshanic Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) inserted the ball to classmate
Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT/Stonington), who in turn set the table for Smith's goal.
Â
Ursinus responded with two goals in a span of 42 seconds to tie the game and then take the lead. The goal that puts the Bears on top came on a penalty stroke. The hosts then carried that advantage into halftime.
Â
The teams then played a scoreless second half, which brought an end to TCNJ's impressive winning streak.
Â
In goal for the Lions,
Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) had 11 saves.
Â
TCNJ returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, October 20 when they return home to host rival Rowan University at 7:30 p.m.
