Lions blank Lynx to advance to regional final

Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey advanced to the regional championship game with a 3-0 victory over Rhodes College in the 2015 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament.

The Lions (19-1) will square off against Messiah College tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 p.m. in Lions Stadium. TCNJ and the Falcons faced each other earlier this season as the Lions edged Messiah 1-0 in overtime on September 19.

First-year player Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT/Stonington) led the TCNJ offense with a pair of goals. Junior Jaclyn Douglas (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) also scored, while freshman Taylor Barrett (Neshanic Station/Hunterdon Central) and junior Danielle Andreula (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) each assisted on goals.

Douglas opened the scoring with 17:26 remaining in the first half. She took a feed across the goalmouth from Barrett and slotted her 15th goal of the season. TCNJ doubled its lead just under five minutes later when Morrison gathered her own rebound off a shot and rifled home the winner to increase the cushion to 2-0.

Morrison struck again just over six minutes into the second period. She batted in a pass from Andreula to stretch the host advantage to 3-0.

The Lions held a 32-4 advantage in shots and dominated the majority of play. Junior Kennedy Brislin (Louisville, KY/Sacred Heart) had the best scoring chance for Rhodes with just over minutes remaining in the contest. She fired a shot from the left side that was destined for net, but TCNJ junior defender Lexi Smith (Florence, NJ/Florence Township) was there for a defensive save to keep the shutout intact.

Lynx sophomore Laura Eckelkamp (St. Louis,  MO/Visitation) had a strong game in the cage, making 12 saves in the game. TCNJ junior Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) stopped one shot on goal for the Lions.

Rhodes finished the season with a record of 16-6. The Lynx fell one victory shy of matching their school record of 17 wins set in 2010.
