Top-ranked Trinity gets past TCNJ

Ewing, NJ… Top-ranked Trinity College overcame an early deficit to post a 15-8 road win over The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team on Wednesday.

TCNJ was looking for its second straight win over a top-10 team after winning at then sixth-ranked Salisbury last weekend, but the Bantams prevented the upset bid as they broke a 7-7 tie in the early stages of the second half. They broke that tie with an eight-goal run to gain the upper the hand.

The loss dropped the eighth-ranked Lions to 10-3 as their seven-game winning streak came to an end. The win was the 12th straight for Trinity as they have not lost since its season opener.

These teams last met in the 2013 NCAA Division III quarterfinals with the Bantams winning 12-7 on their home field.

TCNJ got off to a great start scoring the game's first three goals. Junior Cortney Natalicchio (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) opened the scoring for the hosts cashing in on a free-position shot. That goal came 1:56 into the contest. Senior Kendal Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) made it 2-0

A pretty scoring play made it 3-0 for the Lions when sophomore Mia Blackman (Arlington, VA/Field School) used a quick stick to score on a feed from freshman Amanda Muller (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough).

The Bantams broke through with a goal just over 10 minutes into the half, but the Lions were able to get the next two. Senior Erin Healy (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) got the first with Blackman getting her second of the game on a free position.

Trinity then scored the last six goals of the period, all in the final 8:16, to carry a 7-5 lead into the break.

TCNJ quickly stopped the Bantam run in second half with Borup getting two goals in the 4:22 to tie the game at 7-7.

Trinity then tallied the next eight goals to take a 15-7 lead.

Natalicchio her second goal of the game in the final minute to make the final 15-8.

For the Bantams, Martha Griffin led all players with five goals and seven points.

Freshman defender Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT/Stonington) continued her impressive season with five ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers.

TCNJ returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday, April 18 when they host Montclair State University at 1 p.m.
