Ewing, NJ… Muhlenberg College scored five times in the top of the seventh inning to get past The College of New Jersey softball team on Sunday by the score of 6-2.
Â
The Lions led 2-1 going into the final inning, but the Mules were able to come up with a pair of key hits to pick up the non-conference win. The loss dropped TCNJ to 17-8, while Muhlenberg is 14-11.
Â
The game started out as a pitching duel as Lion freshman
Sam Platt (Cedar Grove, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic) and Mulenberg's
Haley Fedak (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) kept the game scoreless into the fifth inning.
Â
The Mules had the first scoring chance of the game in the top of the fourth getting runners at second and third with only one out. TCNJ recorded second out when shortstop
Steph Vuono (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) cut down a runner at the plate trying to score on a ground ball and Platt ended the inning with strikeout to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Muhlenberg did get game's initial run an inning later on a run-scoring single by freshman
Paige Seitz (Oceanside, NJ/Oceanside) for a 1-0 lead.
Â
TCNJ countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of two Mule miscues. Junior
Kristen Fitzsimmons (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) reached on an error and then moved up a base when senior
Lauren Aspiazu (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) spoiled Fedak's no-hit bid with a single up the middle. Fitzsimmons then came around to score when trying to advance to third on a pitch in the dirt, but the throw went into left field allowing the Lion to score.
Â
The Lions took the lead in the last of the sixth when junior
Deanna Utter (Byram, NJ/Lenape Valley) singled laced a single up the middle to score freshman
Bria Bartsch (Montville, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Academy). That his extended Utter's hitting streak to 10 games.
Â
The Mules then scored five times in the seventh with Fedak helping her own cause with a two-run single and
Taylor Trifiolis (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) added a two-run double.
Â
Fedak got the win for the Mules, allowing only four hits and one earned run.
Â
Platt posted a season-high five strike outs as she lost for the first time this season. She dropped to 2-1 on the season.
Â
The Lions enter the final week of the regular season with a pair of road doubleheaders. The first of those is at Montclair State University on Tuesday, April 21 and then at Ramapo College on Saturday.
