Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Morrison nets two as TCNJ beats Valiants

Purchase, NY... The College of New Jersey field hockey team won its 22nd straight game as the Lions collected a 4-1 road win at Manhattanville College on Tuesday.

The victory put top-ranked TCNJ at 7-0 on the season as they have not lost a game in more than a calendar year.

Manhattanville fell to 5-6.

The Lions picked up the only goal of the half with that score coming with 7:09 remaining on the clock. TCNJ got that goal when junior Lexi Smith (Florence, NJ/Florence Twp.) scored on a penalty corner with an assist from freshman Taylor Barrett (Neshanic Station, NJ/Hunterdon Station).

Early in the second half, freshman Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT/Stonington) picked up her first collegiate goal when she cleaned up a rebound. That goal came 7:57 into the new period.

The Valiants countered quickly with their first goal 1:57 later to trim TCNJ's lead in half.

Morrison gave the Lions some breathing room heading into the closing minutes as she notched her second goal of the game in the final 10 minutes. That goal came with 7:16 left in regulation with Smith earning an assist on the play.

The Lions weren't quite done scoring as senior Alicia Wagner (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) tallied with 25 seconds remaining. Smith once again picked up an assist.

TCNJ's Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) earned the win between the pipes as she moved her individual record to 7-0.

The win also left head coach Sharon Pfluger a victory shy of reaching a big milestone. Heading into Thursday's home game with Gwynedd Mercy University, Pfluger has 999 career coaching victories, which are split between field hockey and women's lacrosse. She has a mark of 544-99-9 in field hockey, while boasting an impressive record of 455-51-1 in lacrosse.
