Galloway, N.J. … The College of New Jersey women's soccer team traveled to Stockton University tonight and earned a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory. The ninth ranked Lions now have an overall record of 11-0-1 and 6-0 in the NJAC.
Â
Senior
Christine Levering (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) tallied the golden goal just 53 seconds into the first overtime to set off a wild celebration and clinch the Lions 10th straight triumph.
Despite outshooting the Ospreys 7-0 in the first half, TCNJ couldn't find the back of the net and the game remained scoreless heading into halftime.
Â
Levering got the Lions on the board six minutes into the second half when she headed the ball in on a free kick pass from
Jen McGrogan (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp).
Â
The score quickly went to 2-0 on a tally from
Elizabeth Thoresen (Colts Neck, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) just seven minutes later. Levering passed to Thoresen, who broke away and tipped the ball past the goalie.
Â
Stockton was able to cut the deficit in half however, when Adrianna Boucher converted on a penalty kick.
Â
Three minutes later, Boucher added a second goal to tie the game at 2-2. Neither team was able to score again as regulation expired, so the game went into overtime.
Â
Levering needed less than a minute into the first overtime period to break the tie with her 12th goal of the season.
Kayla Bertolino (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) passed the ball up to a waiting Levering, who shot from the middle of the box and put it past the goalie.
Â
Jessica Weeder (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) got the start in net for TCNJ and made one save throughout the contest.
Â
The Lions are back in action on Saturday, October 15 when they host Montclair State University for an NJAC contest. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start in the TCNJ Soccer Complex.
