St. Davids, PA … The College of New Jersey field hockey team traveled to Eastern University today for its last game of the regular season. The sixth-ranked Lions (14-3) defeated the Eagles (6-11) by a score of 7-0.Â
The Lions scored four goals in the first half. Two of those tallies came from freshman
Cayla Andrews (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown), while
Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT/Stonington) and
Shannon Cowles (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) each scored once.
Cowles' goal was also the senior defenders first collegiate tally in her four year career at TCNJ.
Lexi Smith (Florence, NJ/Florence Township) started the scoring in the second half as she netted the fifth goal of the game with help from
Jackie Schwartz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East).
Jaclyn Douglas (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) added her 17th goal of the season to make the score 6-0 in favor of TCNJ. Andrews earned the assist on the play.
A few minutes later, Morrison added her second goal of the game on a pass from Smith.
Christina Fabiano (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) started in net for the Lions and recorded 4 saves throughout the contest to earn her third shutout of the season.
TCNJ will now focus on the NJAC Tournament as they host Rowan University in the first round game on Wednesday, November 2, at 8 p.m. in Lions Stadium.
The Lions go into the tournament with the number one seed and will look to capture the programs 24th conference championship. A conference title would also assure TCNJ a berth to the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament, where they have previously won 11 national titles throughout program history.
