Wesley storms past TCNJ

Dover, DE … Five rushing touchdowns led Wesley College to a 41-0 victory over The College of New Jersey in New Jersey Athletic Conference play on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Drass Field in Dover, DE.

Holding a 13-0 lead at the half, the Wolverines scored two touchdowns in third quarter and two more in the final quarter to pull away for their third victory over the season.

The Lions (0-5) continued to struggle on offense, but did get a strong performance from junior running back Chad Scott (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville). Scott rushed for a season-best 93 yards on 18 carries, including a 42-yard scamper during the opening drive.

After Wesley deferred the opening coin flip allowing TCNJ to receive, Scott carried five times in a nine-play drive that chewed up 72 yards. On third-and-10, quarterback Trevor Osler (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) connected with wide receiver Jeff Matonelli (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) for 10 yards and a first down, Scott followed with a first down carry, rolling 42 yards before finally being forced out of bounds at the Wolverine 20. Osler ran for eight yards on third-and-10, but the ensuing field goal attempt missed wide right to keep the game scoreless.

Wesley countered with a nine-play, 80-yard drive capped by a Jamar Baynard five-yard touchdown run to give the host an early lead. A field goal later in the period made it a 10-0 game.

With the Wolverines driving in Lions' territory late in the second quarter, senior defensive back Drew Dickison (Tewksbury, NJ/North Hunterdon) intercepted a pass at the four-yard line from Nick Falkenberg to stop the Wesley drive. Wesley would tack on one more field goal before the intermission.

Following the break, the Wolverine offense established its rhythm. They found the end zone on four of their next five possessions to put the contest out of reach. Alex Kemp caught a six-yard TD pass from Falkenberg and E.J. Lee scored three straight rushing touchdowns to cap the scoring. Lee finished with 153 rushing yards on the day.

TCNJ tight end Chase Vena (Tabernacle, NJ / Seneca) led the Lions receiving corps with three catches. Freshman punter Zach Warcola (Mendham, NJ / Mendham) booted seven punts for an average of 44.0 yards and a long of 53. He and fellow punter Colin Cazzetta (Slate Hill, NY / Minisink Valley) each landed a punt inside the 20.

Sophomore linebacker Max Busca (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) led all defensive player with a game-high 12 tackles. Junior linebacker Anthony Gambone (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added nine tackles and recorded a tackle for a loss of a yard. Junior Connor Tierney (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) posted a pair of tackles and a sack for a loss of four yards.

TCNJ will return home next week to host Frostburg State University in Lions Stadium at 1 p.m. The Bobcats (3-1) host William Paterson University (2-2) at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
