Ewing, N.J. … The College of New Jersey baseball team return to form, compiling 19 hits en route to a 14-8 victory over Immaculata University on Tuesday afternoon in George Ackerman Park.
The Lions (15-4) discarded a three-game skid by racking up 13 runs in the first three innings. Senior
Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) led the charge by blasting a grand slam homer in the second inning. He finished 3-for-5 with five RBI, while sophomore
Zach Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) went 4-for-5 with three runs batted in.
Â
Immaculata got on the board with one run in the top of the first inning, but that was the last time they would lead for the duration of the game.
Â
The Lions came out swinging in the bottom of the frame, talling four runs off of four hits.
Shindler roped a two-run triple and
Alex Christian (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) had an RBI double to lead the team in the inning.
Â
The Mighty Macs added two more runs in the second, but TCNJ retaliated with four more runs off of one swing. With the bases loaded, Roberts deposited a 1-1 pitcher over the right-field fence to make it an 8-3.
Â
TCNJ continued to generate offense as they added five in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by
John Rizzi (Long Hill, NJ/Watchung Hills HS) hitting a double and
Garen Turner (Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley HS) blasting an RBI triple to right center.
Â
In the fifth inning, the Lions posted their 14th run of the game. Roberts doubled to start off and tagged on a Schindler fly ball to right. Christian singled to push Roberts home, before getting out at second to end the inning.
Â
Immaculata scored one more run in the eighth but it wasn't enough for a comeback as the Lions got their 15th win of the season.
Â
Zac deRocco (Red Bank, NJ/Middletown South) got the start on the mound, pitching four full innings and striking out one batter.
Dylan Crowley (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) came in for relief for three innings and earned his first collegiate win, allowing only three hits and striking out four.
Joe DiLorenzo (West Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep, NJ) finished out the game; he allowed two hits, one run, and struck out four.
Â
The Lions are back in action on April 7 when they travel to Stockton University for a conference matchup. The game is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
