Glassboro, N.J. … The College of New Jersey softball team registered a 4-0 shutout victory over Rutgers-Camden in the second round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. With the win, the Lions are now 28-13 overall on the season and continue their quest for the NJAC title.
TCNJ will now square off against Rowan University in the championship game. It will be a winner-take-all showdown that is scheduled for 11 a.m.
Â
The Lions took a 3-0 lead in the second inning by capitalizing on several Scarlet Raptor errors. They loaded the bases with one out and then scored two runs on an errant throw to home plate after a fielder's choice hit by
Gaby Bennett (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert). The third run also scored on a throwing mistake.
Â
In the seventh inning,
Steph Vuono (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) got things started with a double to center. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Kristen Fitzsimmons (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial). Bennett drove in Vuono on a ground out to shortstop to increase the TCNJ lead to 4-0.
Â
Sam Platt (Cedar Grove, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) pitched the entire game to pick up her 17th win of the season and second of the tournament. She allowed just three hits and struck out five batters.
Â
Leading the offense for the Lions were
Deanna Utter (Byram, NJ/Lenape Valley Regional) who was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, and Bennett who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
