Norfolk, Va. … The College of New Jersey women's soccer team opened its 2016 season in impressive fashion as they defeated Virginia Wesleyan College 3-0 at the Atlantic Orthopaedic Soccer Tournament.

The Lions (1-0) scored two quick goals midway through the first half and tacked on an insurance goal in the second half to down the Marlins (0-1) in the host tourney.

Junioe
Jessica Goldman (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) got TCNJ on the board in the 22
nd minute. She took a feed from
Christine Levering (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) and deposited her first goal of the season.

Just over two minutes later, Levering was on the receiving end of a pass from junior
Abigail Emmert (Pipersville, Pa/Central Bucks East). Levering found the back of the net for the first time since the 2014 NCAA Championship tournament against Misericordia. Levering suffered a leg injury in 2015 and celebrated her return to action with a goal and an assist.

TCNJ capped the scoring with a third goal in the second period. Freshman
Jen McGrogan (Pompton Plains, NJ/Peaquannock Twp.) made her collegiate debut a memorable one by notching her first career goal. Goldman delivered a pass and McGrogan converted in the 71
st minute to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Jessica Weeder (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) registered four saves in the victory to record her first shutout of the season.

The Lions are back on the pitch tomorrow when they face Christopher Newport University at 8 p.m.
