Collegeville, PA… Tori Tiefenthaler (Freehold, NJ/Biotechnology/Freehold Borough) broke a 1-1 tie with 3:46 remaining as The College of New Jersey field hockey team gutted out a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon. The fourth-ranked Lions picked up their sixth straight victory to improve to 10-2 on the season. The Bears are now 0-4 against ranked competition and fall to 7-6 overall.
Â
TCNJ got on the board early, with
Kayla Peterson (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) scoring off a penalty corner after receiving the feed from
Taylor Barrett (Neshanic Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central). Bears goalie Jules Singer appeared to make a play on the shot, but Peterson had enough force on the shot to still find the back of the cage.
Â
The Bears got the equalizer just under two minutes into the second half. Devon Carroll found Erin Saybolt on a penalty corner to tie the contest and set up Tiefenthaler's heroics.
Â
Cayla Andrews (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown) drove the ball down the right side, but whiffed on an initial shot attempt. Tiefenthaler took advantage, blasting the loose ball into the top left corner for the game-winner.
Â
TCNJ out-shot Ursinus 13-10 despite allowing 11 penalty corners to the Bears and drawing just four.
Â
The Lions return to action Tuesday night with a conference match-up against Stockton University. Game time is at 5:00 PM.
