Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lions Down Red Hawks in Conference Contest

Ewing, NJ-- The College of New Jersey men's soccer team (5-7-3, 1-3-3 NJAC) defeated Montclair State University (10-5-1, 4-3-0 NJAC) in a conference contest on Saturday.

In the first half, the Lions struck first in the 20th minute. Matt Skinner (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) took a cross from the left side from Ryan Vazquez (Kinnelon, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and punched in a header to get the Lions on the board. The goal was Skinner's first on the 2017 campaign. The rest of the first half, the Lions were able to control the pace of the game and did not allow the Red Hawks to score despite getting off five shots. Matt Decker (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills) was strong on the defensive end. He stopped several Red Hawk attacks, and one came on a breakaway where he chased down the Red Hawk forward from behind and cleared the ball away.

In the second half, the Lions broke the game open with two goals in 36 seconds. In the 60th minute, Vazquez took a nice feed from Peter Dresch (Highland Park, NJ/Saint Joseph) inside the box and found the back of the net. Dresch sent a beautiful low pass from just beyond the left post that snuck by the defenders and found Vazquez. The Lions then added another as James Pike (Short Hills, NJ/Saint Peter's Prep) scored a header off of a free kick from Kevin Esteves (Elizabeth NJ, Elizabeth) to extend the advantage to 3-0. The rest of the game, the Lions denied the high powered Red Hawk offense. Prior to the today, the Red Hawks ranked ninth in NCAA Division III in goals per game with an average of 3.36.

In net for the Lions was Daniel Mecadon (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) who earned his first career win. In just his second career start, Mecadon played well as he made four saves and intercepted several Red Hawk crosses that had potential. Mike Saalfrank was in net for the Red Hawks who tallied three saves.

The Red Hawks held the advantage in shots 15-10, and corner kicks 4-1.

Next up for the Lions is a home game Saturday, October 21st against Kean University at 11:00am as part of homecoming weekend.
