Lions Clinch Top Seed in NJAC Tournament

Glassboro, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's soccer team survived their third overtime game of the season Wednesday, defeating Rowan University 2-1. The second-ranked Lions improved their record to 16-0 overall and closed out New Jersey Athletic Conference play at 9-0. TCNJ secured the top seed in next week's conference tournament. The 18th-ranked Profs fall to 12-2-2 overall and will be the second seed in the conference tournament after posting a 7-1-1 record in NJAC play.

For just the second time this season, the Lions faced a deficit. Melissa Kelly played a through ball to Catherine McCarry, who played a perfect first touch to beat the Lions net minder and put the Profs up 1-0 in the 13th minute.

The first time TCNJ trailed this season, they responded in eight minutes and 40 seconds. Wednesday it took just 66 seconds for the Lions to equalize. After earning a corner on the initial rush following the goal, Jen McGrogan (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) took a header that was saved by Shelby Money. Kayla Bertolino (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) punched home the rebound to knot the game at one a piece.

Neither team could break through in regulation. Both sides best chances beat the opposing goalie, but slipped wide of the post as well.

Just over three minutes into overtime, Jessica Goldman (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) played a through ball to Kelly Carolan (Sparta, NJ/Sparta).  Carolan finished to give the Lions the win and secure the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

TCNJ has earned a bye in the opening round of the tournament and will face the winner of Kean University and Stockton University Tuesday October 31st at 7:30 PM in Lions Stadium.
