Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Lions End Regular Season With Win

Senior Day

Ewing, NJ…
The College of New Jersey field hockey team closed out its 2017 regular season with an impressive 5-2 victory over Eastern University. The Lions improved to 13-3 with the win, while the Eagles dropped to 6-12.

The Lions controlled play for the early portion of the first half, but Eagles goalie Nicole Berger stepped up with 13 first-half saves to keep the game scoreless for the opening 20 minutes. TCNJ finally broke through when Kayla Peterson (Cream Ridge, NJ/Allentown) placed a shot past Berger and off the body of an Eagle defender for a penalty stroke. Sidney Padilla (Suffern, NY/Suffern) calmly stepped up and converted for the first goal of the game.

The Lions extended the lead less than four minutes later. Taylor Barrett (Neshanic Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) found Cayla Andrews (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown) for her 11th of the season. After the Eagles responded, Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT/Stonington) grabbed her own rebound and scored to put the Lions up 3-1 at the half.

Eastern would again narrow the gap early in the second half, scoring on a penalty stroke of their own. Just as before, the Lions would answer. Morrison would take over the team lead with her 15th of the season. Tori Tiefenthaler (Freehold, NJ/Biotechnology/Freehold Borough) would equal her teammate scoring her 15th of the year to close out the scoring.

Goalie Christina Fabiano (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) made five saves on the day that she and Morrison were honored for senior day.

The team was also playing 4 the cure with all proceeds of the game going to the National Foundation for Cancer Research.

TCNJ will host a New Jersey Athletic Conference Semi-final game Wednesday at 7:30 PM in Lions Stadium.
