Lions End Season With Senior Day Win

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey football team hosted senior night and the Lions posted their best effort of the season, sending the class out with a 27-0 victory over Southern Virginia University. The Lions close out the season 4-6 overall, going 4-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference and winning four of their last five contests. The Knights end the year at 2-8 overall and 1-8 in the NJAC.

The Lions opened the scoring after taking over possession on a missed field goal. The Lions marched 56 yards on 11 plays, with senior running back Khani Glover (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) rushing for 34 yards on four attempts on the drive. After stalling out in the red zone, classmate Zach Pharo (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) connected from 31 yards out. Glover ran for 103 yards in the game.

Early in the second quarter senior quarterback Trevor Osler (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) found his favorite target this season, classmate Thomas Koenig (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) deep down the middle, but the pass got Koenig just far enough off balance that the Lions were forced to settle for a 54-yard gain and a second Pharo field goal, this one coming from 34 yards out.

On TCNJ's next possession, Osler and Koenig refused to be denied the end zone, floating a perfect pass for a 41-yard touchdown after the speedy receiver got behind the secondary. Yet another senior, Rob Agnoni (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), made a huge impact on the game intercepting the Knights quarterback on the final play of the first half to ensure TCNJ took a 13-0 lead into the break. Agnoni also made a diving interception in the second half.

TCNJ picked up offensively in the third quarter, Osler went 4-for-5 on the Lions opening drive of the third quarter, finishing the drive with 42 yards and a four yard touchdown to Jack Clevenger (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury). Osler finished the season with 2,047 yards, second most in a single year in TCNJ history.

After a fourth down stop, the Lions got right back to work. Koenig caught an 18-yard pass and drew a 15-yard penalty at the end of the play and would eventually find the end zone for the seventh time this season to produce the final score. His 785 receiving yards is fifth best in a single season in TCNJ history, and currently most in the NJAC.

Kevin Hennelly (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) led the Lions with nine tackles in his final game.

The Lions will graduate 16 seniors, and all of them got to end their careers on a high note.
