Glassboro, NJ…The College of New Jersey (15-6, 11-3 NJAC) saw their seven game winning streak come to an end at the hands of hot shooting Rowan University (13-8, 8-6 NJAC) 88-74 Wednesday night.
The Profs came out of the gates hot, as reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference player of the week Nick DePersia scoring 11 points and Shawn Wilson scoring five, to stake the Profs to a 16-4 lead. Nick DePersia, coming off two straight 29-point performances, finished the first half with 19 Â of his game-high 21 points, shooting 5-for-6 from long range.
The Lions countered, using a 6-0 run on back-to-back baskets by
Bobby Brackett (Lawrenceville, NJ / Lawrence) and a lay-up by
Corey Stanford (Pittsburgh, PA / Penn Trafford), but were unable to close the gap to within single digits. Brackett scored nine points and grabbed 10 boards, before leaving the game late in the first half with an apparent knee injury.
Rowan led at the half 45-34.
The Profs extended the lead again to 58-42, when Stanford and
Eric Klacik (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge) hit back-to-back threes to again cut the lead to 10. Stanford and Klacik each scored 14 to pace the Lions.
A three-point basket with 2:35 remaining pushed
Eric Murdock, Jr. (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater) over the 1,000 career point mark. he became just the 24th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Murdock, Jr. finished with nine points.
TCNJ put up a late comeback attempt, using a Klacik triple, a lay-up from
Elias Bermudez (Westwood, NJ / Westwood), and a free-throw from Klacik to cut the lead to 77-70. That was as close as the Lions would get however, as Rowan knocked down nine free throws to close out the game.
TCNJ was out shot from the field 48.4% (30-62) to 37.0% (27-73), 3-point range 34.6% (9-26) to 22.2% (6-27), and from the free throw line 67.9% (19-28) to 56.0% (14-25).
The Lions return home Saturday, February 4 at 3:00 pm when they host Ramapo College. The team's senior class will be honored prior to the game.
