Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey sewed up a series sweep as they defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 4-2 on Monday afternoon in George Ackerman Park
Â
The Lions defeated the Scarlet Raptors this past Friday afternoon and took care of the make-up game from Thursday's rainout with a well-pitched game. TCNJ generated just enough offense to move to 15-6 on the season and 5-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rutgers-Camden fell to 10-12 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC.
Â
TCNJ starting pitcher
Dylan Crowley (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) pitched three scoreless innings and struck out three to open the game. He had to leave the game due to some discomfort and handed the ball over to sophomore
Zac deRocco (Red Bank, NJ/Middletown). deRocco tossed four innings and surrendered just a pair of unearned runs. Junior close
Matt Curry (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) came on to get the final six outs to earn his third save of the season.
Â
The Lions bolted out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Sophomore
Ryan Fischer (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) ripped a first-pitch fastball to right-center to get things going in the first. Following a fielder's choice,
Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egpyt) turned on a 3-2 pitch and ripped it to left for a run-scoring double.
CJ Gearhart (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) laced a lined drive to center, and Lindsay came around to score to put the Lions up 2-0 in the first.
Â
The Scarlet Raptors tied the game in the fourth. After an infield error extended the inning, Doug Carter, Jr. doubled to left to plate two and even the score.
Â
In the sixth, Gearhart doubled to center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Mike Follet (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). He raced home on a wild pitch to give TCNJ a one-run edge.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, Follet hit a sharp single to center and stole second. He came around the score on an infield error to give Curry and co. a 4-2 cushion.
Â
In the ninth, Curry recorded a strikeout, before surrendering a double to left-center. Brandon Cornelius then hit a line drive right at Fischer and he fired to second to double the runner and end the game. Fischer had a busy day at the hot corner and finished with nine assists in the game.
Â
The Lions are back on their home field tomorrow when they host Farmingdale State College at 3:30 p.m.
