Lions shut out Mount Union to advance in NCAA Tournament

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey lacrosse team continued their playoff run with a complete team effort Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Mount Union 14-0. The Lions have now reached the round of eight in every season since 1985. This marked the Purple Raiders second trip to the round of 16 having previously reached the regional semifinals in 2015.

With the win, TCNJ improved their record to 17-1. Mount Union closed out the season with a 14-4 record.

TCNJ opened the scoring 44 seconds in to the game when Kathleen Jaeger (Whitehouse Station, NJ / Hunterdon Central) found an open Amanda Muller (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) who beat the Purple Eagle goalie. Muller followed with an unassisted goal 16 seconds later to extend the lead to 2-0.

Before the close of the first half, the Lions received goal tallies from Erin Harvey (Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape), Alexandria Fitzpatrick (Burlington, NJ / Northern Burlington), Allie Gorman (Sicklerville, NJ / Washington Twp.), and Mia Blackman (Arlington, VA / Field School). Jaeger added in a hat trick and when Olivia Cleale (Yardley, PA / Notre Dame (NJ)) deposited her second of the game with just under two minutes remaining in the half, the Lions had an 11-0 lead.

In the second half, Jaeger scored her ninth goal of the tournament, Muller completed her hat trick, and Gorman converted a free position attempt to produce the final score.

Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT / Stonington) led a staunch defensive effort with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. She now has 157 career caused turnovers and 211 ground balls. Morrison now ranks second in TCNJ program history in ground balls and 13th nationally in caused turnovers.

Goalie Miranda Chrone (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) lowered her season GAA to just 3.14 with the Lions third ever shutout in the NCAA Tournament. Chrone made two saves and improved to 17-1 on the season.

The Lions now await the winner of the second regional semi-final game between Middlebury College and The College at Brockport. That game will be played Sunday at 1:00 pm in Lions Stadium.
