Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey ran into a talented Wesley College squad, falling 33-0 on Saturday afternoon in Lions Stadium.
Â
The Lions dropped to 0-3 overall, while the 24
th-ranked Wolverines notched their first victory of the season and improved to 1-1.
Â
Sophomore running back E.J. Lee ran for a career-high 188 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wesley offense. Quarterback
Khaalik Burroughs completed 18-of-23 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns in his first start.
James Okike was also a force, catching nine passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.
Â
TCNJ was able to move the ball on Wesley, but had trouble capping off drives. They produced 19 first downs and
Trevor Osler (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) threw for 177 yards, but they weren't able to manufacture any points to show for it. They worked their way into the red zone and two occasions, but the Wolverines got stingy with their defense.
Â
Wesley got on the board with 4:50 remaining in the first quarter. Wide receiver
Ben Moore was in motion and took the handoff from Burroughs and rumbled 13 yards into the end zone.
Â
Just over three minutes later, Burroughs found Okike for 11-yard touchdown pass. That was set up by a 73-yard scamper by Lee earlier in drive, which was three plays and 90 yards over 1:09 of play.
Â
Midway through the second quarter, Lee received a great block and found daylight midway to his left to register a 19-yard TD run with 7:41 remaining in the half.
Â
TCNJ had an impressive drive to close out the half. They compiled 19 plays and traveled 59 yards. Osler looked to hit
Jack Clevenger (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) in back of the end zone on the final play of the period, but the pass was broken by
DaJahn Lowery as time expired.
Â
Wesley continued to press after the intermission. Lee capped a nine-play, 67-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run, his second of the day.
Alex Kemp was on the receiving of a 9-yard touchdown strike from Burroughs to make it a 33-0 contest.
A bright spot for TCNJ thus far has been their ability to garner takeaways. Sophomore
Sam Jackson (Linwood, NJ/Mainland Regional) had a big game, picking off two passes as the Lions have now compiled five interceptions on the season. Senior
Kevin Hennelly (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) led the TCNJ defense with eight tackles and also forced a fumble. Junior
Max Busca (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and senior
Troy Domenick (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each finished with six takedowns.
Â
Clevenger caught a season-best eight passes for 66 yards in the game.
Vincent Guckin (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) recorded six catches for 42 yards and now has a team-high 17 receptions on the season.
Â
TCNJ returns to Lions Stadium next Saturday, squaring off against Salisbury University at noon.
