Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

TCNJ Wins Season Opener

Haverford, PA… The College of New Jersey Women's Soccer team competed in the opening round of the Haverford College Kick Off Classic Saturday afternoon.  The 12th ranked Lions defeated York College (PA) 3-0 to advance to the final tomorrow afternoon against 20th ranked Arcadia University. That game will take place at 1:30 PM.

With the win TCNJ improves to 1-0, while the Spartans fall to 0-1.

Neither team produced many scoring chances early as the game remained tied through the first half hour. Late in the first half however, senior Hannah Richman (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor) found the back of the net to send the Lions into the half with 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 into the 71st minute when senior Jessica Goldman (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) chose to play a corner kick short to freshman Faith Eichenour (Neptune, NJ/Neptune). Eichenour took a moment to observe the defense before ripping a shot that ricocheted off a Spartan defender to extend the lead. Eichenour joins teammates Jen McGrogan (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.), Elizabeth Thoresen (Colts Neck, NJ/Red Bank Catholic), and Richman as Lions who have scored goals in their collegiate debut.

With just 22 seconds remaining freshman Julia Obst (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) joined that list, depositing a right to left feed from classmate Gianna Zarra (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) for the game's final tally.

McGrogan, senior Kelly Wieczerzak (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley), and sophomore Ally DeRiggi (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) played every minute in front of sophomore goalie Nicole DiPasquale (Paramus, NJ/Paramus). DiPasquale made two saves to earn her first career shutout.

TCNJ outshot York 31 to six.
