Newark, NJ- The College of New Jersey men's soccer team (4-5-2, 0-2-2 NJAC) was defeated by the third ranked Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers University-Newark (12-0-0, 4-0-0 NJAC) Saturday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match up by a final score of 3-1.

The Scarlet Raiders opened up the scoring in the 17th minute when Fabio De Sousa took a long ball and punched it in the upper right corner. A couple of minutes later, Hubert Dul got control of a rebound from inside of the box and found the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0. In the 29th minute, De Sousa converted on a penalty kick to give the Scarlet Raiders a 3-0 lead which they took into halftime.

The Lions got on the board in the 73rd minute when Sam Monaco (Point Pleasant Boro, NJ/Point Pleasant) took a feed from Peter Dresch (Highland Park, NJ/Saint Joseph) and beat the Scarlet Raider keeper to cut the deficit to 3-1. Dresch corralled a rebound that caromed off the crossbar, and found Monaco in front, and the sophomore midfielder converted for his first goal of the season. The Lions kept the offensive pressure on the Scarlet Raider keeper, as they fired 11 shots in the second half.

In net for the Lions, Michael Kayal (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) tallied four saves. The Lions held the edge in shots 17-16, with eight shots being on goal compared to the Scarlet Raider seven, and the corner kicks were even with both teams taking five.
