Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey women's basketball team (10-3, 5-1 NJAC) was victorious against Ramapo College (4-10, 1-6 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon in Packer Hall by a final score of 74-56.
Nikki Schott (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) led the Lions as she scored a team high 20 points and grabbed five rebounds.Â
The Lions used an 8-1 stretch in the first quarter to take a 16-7 lead with four minutes remaining.
Jen Byrne (Medford, NJ/Medford) converted on an and one on a strong take to the basket and hit the free throw to give the Lions the nine point advantage. At the end of the opening quarter the Lions held a 19-16 lead, and broke the game open with a massive 20-0 run to start the second quarter. They were on fire from beyond the arc, as they hit six three pointers in a row to propel them to a 38-16 lead. Schott hit two jumpers in the final minute and a half to give the Lions a 45-22 lead that they would take into the locker room. In the second quarter, the Lions outscored the Roadrunners 26-6. The second half was a back and forth affair as the Roadrunners outscored the Lions 34-29, however the second quarter run wound up making the difference.Â
Schott scored 20 points on an efficient 9-10 shooting from the floor, and played strong low post defense as she registered three blocked shots. Byrne scored 17 points, and added six rebounds as well as four assists.
Charlotte Schum (East Hanover, NJ/Morris Catholic) scored 15 points on an efficient 5-9 shooting including 4-8 from three point range, and dished out six assists. With the six assists, she moves into 13th place in program history, as she now has 211 on her career.
Samantha Famulare (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) tallied nine points as she hit three three pointers.
For the Roadrunners, Amber Sagan scored a team high 20 points off of the bench.Â
On the game, the Lions shot 28-61 (46%) from the field including an impressive 11-26 (42.3%) from beyond the arc.
With the victory the Lions improved to 10-3 and 5-1 in the conference, and currently sit second in the NJAC standings behind only Montclair State University. They will resume action with another NJAC match-up against Rutgers University-Newark on January 10th at Packer Hall.Â
