EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey men's soccer team picked up a New Jersey Athletic Conference victory on Saturday with a 2-0 win over New Jersey City University. TCNJ improves to 8-4-2 on the season and 2-3-2 in the conference, while NJCU falls to 5-8 including 0-7 in the conference.
Just over two minutes in,
Abdullah Afridi had an excellent opportunity yet his bending shot bounced off of the crossbar. Six minutes later, Afridi had another look that was denied by the Gothic Knight keeper. The Lions defense was able to control the first half and put up the zero. On the offensive end the Lions had their chances as they outshot the Gothic Knights 15-4 in the first period.
In the 75
th minute, the Lions broke through.
Ryan Santos made an aggressive run up the right side, and sent a low pass to the center of the box that found
Michael Maltese who snuck it inside of the right post to make it 1-0. The goal marked the first of Maltese's career.
TCNJ struck again about five minutes later. Maltese send in a corner kick that was headed by
James Pike, then
Joerg Jauk got his head on the ball and directed it in.
In net for the Lions was
Daniel Mecadon, who recorded four saves and pitched his third shutout of the season.
Next up for the Lions is a road trip to Brooklyn College on Monday, Oct. 15, at 4:00 p.m.
