EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey field hockey team won their sixth straight game Saturday afternoon, defeating William Paterson University 8-0. The fourth-ranked Lions are now 9-1 on the year and 2-0 in the NJAC. The Pioneers are 5-7 and 1-2 in conference play.
Â
The Lions scored early in the fifth minute. An initial shot by
Jordan Allegretto was stopped and in the ensuing fight for possession
Caroline Quinn tucked the ball into the net, giving the Lions an early lead. Allegretto would follow up less than two minutes later, this time finding the back of the cage off a corner on feeds from
Sidney Padilla and
Kayla Peterson. Just over one minute after that,
Tori Tiefenthaler tipped in a shot from
Kayla Peterson after a corner insert by
Caroline Quinn.
Â
The Lions would again go on a three goal run toward the end of the half.
Tori Hannah bookended another Tiefenthaler goal as the Lions took a 6-0 lead into the break. The first of Hannah's goals showed off her hand-eye coordination deflecting a bouncing pass out of midair.
Â
The Lions capped the scoring in the final ten minutes.
Cayla Andrews scored her ninth of the season off her own rebound following a defensive save.
Iris Schuck took a pass from Quinn and walked unimpeded into the scoring arc before firing a shot that beat the Pioneer goalie.
Â
TCNJ out-shot William Paterson 37-2.
Â
Maddie Beaumont needed just a single save to record the team's sixth shutout of 2018 and fourth straight clean sheet.
Â
The Lions will now travel to FDU-Florham Tuesday to face a Devils team that is receiving votes in the latest NFHCA poll. Pushback is set for 7:00 p.m.
