EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey women's soccer team opened up the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament with a 4-0 win over Western Connecticut State University on Saturday. The Lions improve their record to 14-1-1 on the season, while the Colonials close out the year at 14-9.
The Lions struck first in the 21
st minute.
Jen McGrogan punched one inside a crowd off of a corner kick. She had a shot that was saved by the Colonial keeper yet stayed with it and tapped it in for her first goal of the season.
TCNJ got the second one on the board in the 71
st minute.
Randi Smith was set up by
Despina Lianidis, and Smith sent a shot from 30 yards out on the right side. The ball was aided by the wind and landed in the back of the net, and the goal was the second on the season for Smith.
Just nine minutes later, the Lions added another.
Lauren McLaughlin scored off of a corner kick by
Ally Weaver to make it a 3-0 game. TCNJ continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal, as they added a fourth goal from
Julianna Bertolino in the 83
rd minute to make it 4-0.
On the game, the Lions had a 23-5 edge in shots, as well as a 12-3 lead in corner kicks.
TCNJ will be back at it tomorrow, in the second round to take on Farmingdale State in Lions Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
