Claremont, Calif. – In the first game of the 2018 David Wells Classic, The College of New Jersey women's basketball team was defeated by Pomona-Pitzer by a final score of 71-60. With the loss, TCNJ fell to 1-2 on the season, while Pomona-Pitzer boosted its record to 2-2.
In the first quarter both sides traded buckets until TCNJ used an 9-2 stretch to take a 17-11 lead with 1:13 to go.
Shannon Devitt knocked down a three-pointer off of an assist from
Cailey Gibson, then Gibson hit a pair of free throws to put the Lions up 15-11. Devitt hit a pair of free throws to put the Lions up by six with just over a minute to go in the opening period.
With 5:38 to go in the second quarter, the Lions used a
Sam Famulare lay up to go up 28-21, yet Pomona-Pitzer was able to control the end of the half and take a 34-30 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter, Pomona-Pitzer was able to carry over the momentum and build a 60-49 lead. The Sagehens were able to control the remainder of the game, and did not let the Lions back within double digits in the fourth quarter.
Devitt posted her second straight double-double with a team-high 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
Jen Byrne also tallied a double-double for the second consecutive outing, as she scored 11 points along with 10 boards. Famulare added 11 points on 5-11 shooing from the field.
The Lions will conclude the David Wells Classic with a game against Claremont-McKenna on Nov. 24, at 7:00 p.m. pacific time.
