EWING, N.J. – In a thrilling 108 minutes, the 8
th ranked College of New Jersey women's soccer team won their 18
th New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship by a final score of 1-0 over Rowan University.
Taylor Nolan scored the game-winning goal with just two minutes to play in the second overtime to lift the Lions to victory.
The first half was a back and forth battle that set the tone for the rest of the game. The Profs had the best scoring chance in the 38
th minute, as Jessica Logan sent a bullet shot from 25 yards out that was heading into the top part of the net, but TCNJ keeper
Nicole DiPasquale went full extension and got a hand on it to keep the Profs off of the board.
Ally Weaver had an opportunity three minutes before the half ended with a deep shot, however Shelby Money was able to come up with the save. The Lions had a 6-4 shot lead in the first half.
With about 20 minutes to play, the Lions had an opportunity to score when
Randi Smith sent a cross that was deflected by Rowan and heading towards the net. A Prof defender was somehow able to clear it right before the ball crossed the threshold to keep the game locked up 0-0.
Neither side was able to find the golden goal in regulation or the first overtime, so the conference championship went into double OT. The Profs had an excellent chance, as they had a shot on an empty net, yet
Jen McGrogan came up with the clutch defensive save to keep the Lions alive.
Only two minutes later, the Lions found the back of the net. Smith sent a cross from the right side that found
Nikki Butler, and Butler's header ricocheted off of the crossbar. Nolan punched in the rebound with a header to give the Lions the conference title and set off a wild celebration.
The win marked the second year in a row the Lions have won the conference. TCNJ will now find out its NCAA Championship Tournament draw on Monday, as the selection show will begin at 1:30 p.m.
