LEXINGTON, Va. – The TCNJ men's basketball team entered Friday afternoon's game against Cabrini averaging 9.8 three-point makes per game, tops in the NJAC. The Lions blew that number away by making 21 three pointers in a 92-74 victory over the Cavaliers in the first round of the Washington & Lee Holiday Tournament. That number is good for second for three pointers in a single game by a team. TCNJ made 22 in a victory over Scranton last season.
Junior
Randall Walko led the way for the Lions, sinking 10 of his 18 shots from beyond the arc. Walko finished with 32 points. His 10 three pointers doubled up on his career-high of five, set last season and matched again this year against Montclair State. Walko also helped his league-leading scoring average. He entered the game with a 20.1 points per game average.
The Lions (6-5) trailed for a grand total of 15 seconds in the game, coming on a single possession early in the first half. After falling behind, 6-5, with 17:36 to play in the first half, the Lions went on a 22-7 run to take a commanding 27-13 lead with 11:12 to play. That extended run started – and ended – with a Walko three pointer.
Cabrini (2-9) had the lead trimmed to as few as four a couple minutes later, but the Lions recovered to carry a 48-37 lead into halftime. The second half started with a 7-0 TCNJ run to extend the lead to 55-37 thanks to a pair of buckets from
Jordan Glover and another Walko three pointer.
The TCNJ lead fell to eight points on two occasions midway through the second half. Cabrini had it down to 62-54 with 12:11 left, but the Lions responded with a 12-2 run to regain a comfortable margin. Three pointers exclusively fueled that run. Walko made three of them, and
Travis Jocelyn picked up the fourth. That run made it 74-56 TCNJ with 9:53 to play.
Glover finished with a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Niall Carpenter also had 11 points, and he missed a double-double by a single rebound. They joined Walko as the three Lions in double figures in points, but a total of 11 Lions scored in the game.
The Lions assisted on 24 of their 30 field goals, and
P.J. Ringel had nine of those. He also added six rebounds.
With the victory, the Lions will play Centre in the tournament championship game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
