CAMDEN, N.J. – The College of New Jersey women's basketball team earned its fourth straight victory with a 70-60 win over Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday night. The Lions improved to 5-3 including 4-0 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play, while the Scarlet Raptors dropped to 5-3 and 2-2 in the conference.
The Lions fell behind by three in the first couple of minutes, yet regained the first quarter lead with an 8-0 run.
Cailey Gibson knocked down a three-pointer to put TCNJ ahead 10-5.
Gibson remained locked in throughout the game. With just over a minute to go in the first half,
Shannon Devitt found her beyond the arc, and she sank another triple to put TCNJ up 33-28. Just before the half ended, Devitt hit a lay-up off of a
Sam Famulare assist to make it 35-30, a lead the Lions took into the locker room.
The Lions took an eight point advantage with an 8-2 stretch to begin the fourth quarter.
Jen Byrne collected three straight buckets for TCNJ, then she set up Devitt who converted a jumper to make it 55-47 with 6:33 to go.
The Scarlet Raptors pulled to within 62-60, yet Famulare came through with a clutch lay-up off an assist from
Elle Cimilluca to make it a 64-60 TCNJ lead. The Lions defense was able to get stops on the other end, and TCNJ made its free throws to ice the victory.
Famulare led all scorers with 19 points on the evening, as she shot an efficient 8-for-14 from the field. Devitt continued to be a double-double machine, as she grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds along with 12 points on a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor. That marks her fourth straight double-double and sixth on the season. Devitt is also the leading rebounder in the NJAC, and tied her career-high with the 18 boards tonight.
Byrne also added another double-double to raise her season total to four. She scored 18 points with 12 boards, and kept her teammates involved with a career-high seven assists. Gibson scored 17 points off of the bench which tied her career-high.
Next up for TCNJ is a conference showdown against Montclair State University at home on Dec. 8, at 1:00 p.m.
