Osceola, FL… The College of New Jersey softball team continued their spring dominance, winning a pair of games via run rule, defeating Eastern Connecticut State University 10-1 and New York University 11-1, each in five innings.
Â
In the opener, the Lions fell behind ECSU 1-0 in the bottom of the first courtesy of a pair of doubles from Morgan Bolduc and Sara Pisanelli.
Â
The Lions would quickly respond when
Helena Coppola (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) produced an RBI single, then scored three batters later on an
Elyse Nardozza (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) base hit to right. TCNJ added on a pair more in the third when
Madison Levine (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) ripped an RBI-Double over the center fielder's head and came around to score on a sacrifice fly.
Â
The Lions would break the game open in the top of the fourth.
Jess McGuire (Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) started the inning with a 10-pitch walk. Two batters later, Nardozza singled home pinch-runner
Katie Winchock (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan).
Annalise Suitovsky (Warren Twp., NJ/Watchung Hills) continued the rally with a base hit, followed by a two-run single by red hot
Megan Mayernik (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington).
Lauren Conroy singled home another pair of runs before the rally was over.
Â
Suitovsky squeeze bunted for an RBI-single in the top of the fifth to produce the final score.
Â
The Lions jumped all over Violet pitching early in game two. Suitovsky got the inning started with a lead-off double, later scoring on a Mayernik single. With the bases loaded, Mcguire came through with a clutch two-run rip to left. The next batter,
Gaby Bennett (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), would follow with a two-run single through the right side of the infield. After
Danielle Carey (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) singled home Bennett, TCNJ was looking at a 6-0 lead.
Â
Lions starting pitcher
Alanna Namit (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) allowed a hit for the first time in 12 innings during the Florida trip in the top of the second, as the Violets recovered a run, but Namit got out of the jam thanks to a brilliant defensive play from Conroy at third base, who snagged a line drive and doubled up the runner on second.
Â
As is so often the case after making a great defensive play, Conroy delivered at the plate in the next half inning hitting an RBI-single and scoring on Kaitlyn Kocinski's (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) triple off the right field fence. McGuire would go on to knock in Kocinski putting TCNJ up 9-1 after two frames.
Â
In the fourth, McGuire delivered once again, doubling home a run before Bennett dropped in a base knock to produce the final score.
Â
Sam Platt (Cedar Grove, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) pitched game one to improve to 2-0 on the season and Namit improved to 3-0 with the game two victory.
