Ewing, NJ... The 20th ranked College of New Jersey baseball team defeated Widener University on Tuesday afternoon by a final tally of 5-4. With the victory the Lions push their winning streak to eight games and improve to 9-2, while the Pride fell to 6-9.Â
The Pride got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, yet the Lions regained the lead with four in the bottom of the fourth.
Patrick Anderson laced a base hit down the left field line that drove in
Mike Follet (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). A couple of batters later,
Tommy McCarthy (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) knocked a base hit through the right side of the infield that drove Anderson home.
Matt Giacose (Wycoff, NJ/Ramapo) singled to right field to drive in another, and
Ryan Fischer (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) scored with some heads up baserunning. Giacose was trying to advance to second where the throw came into, and Fischer bolted to the plate from third and slid under the tag to make it 4-2.
McCarthy registered his second RBI of the afternoon as he drove in
Danny Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro South) with a groundout. In the top of the 8th the Pride had a man on first with one out, however pitcher
Dylan Crowley (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) erased the runner with a nice pickoff move.
Matt Curry (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) slammed the door and got the save as he worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his third save of the year.Â
Anderson went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Giacose went 2-3 with an RBI. The winning pitcher was Mike Walley (Yardley, PA/Notre Dame) who threw 5.1 innings and only allowed two earned runs to pick up his second win of the year.
The Lions are back at it tomorrow, as they host Haverford College for a 3:30 pm start.
