Game Recap: Softball |

Lions Split with Ranked Rowan

Glassboro, NJ… The College of New Jersey softball team extended their winning streak to six games with a 3-2 win in the opening game of a double header at 18th-ranked Rowan University, before falling 3-1 in the back half. The Lions are now 17-5 overall and 5-1 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play. The Profs are 17-6-1 overall and 3-3 in league play.

TCNJ struck first in game one, scoring on an RBI fielder's choice by Madison Levine (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) which scored Gabby Bennett (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert).

The Profs answered with a two-run homer off the bat of Morgan Smith. Smith is tied for the most homers in the conference this year with five.

The Lions tied the game in the fifth. Bennett led off the inning with an infield single. After a sacrifice moved her into scoring position, Megan Mayernik (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) delivered an RBI-single to center field.

Jess McGuire (Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) broke the tie in the top of the seventh with an RBI-hit.

Alanna Namit (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) was strong through the first six innings striking out six, but after allowing a base-runner with one down in the seventh TCNJ turned to Eliza Sweet (Shamong, NJ/Shawnee) to close out the game. Sweet induced a fly ball to right field that Helena Coppola (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) gathered and fired to first to double up the Profs base runner and end the game. Namit improved to 8-0 with the win.

In game two, the Lions struggled offensively with just two hits off Lauren Shannon, who went the distance for Rowan to improve to 5-1 on the year.

Bennett record one of the Lions hits and has hit safely in 12 of the last 13 games.

TCNJ returns to action Saturday when they host Ramapo College at 1:00 PM. The Lions will honor Academic Award Recipients between the two games.
