Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey softball team earned a hard fought split on the road at Kean University Saturday afternoon taking game one 2-0, before falling in the nightcap 4-3. The Lions are 24-6 on the year and lead the NJAC at 12-2. The Cougars are 22-8 and 7-5 in league play.
Game one was a true pitchers duel. The Lions broke through in the top of the sixth. With runners on first and third,
Megan Mayernik (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) and
Allie Immerso (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) executed a double steal that allowed Immerso to score.
Lauren Conroy (Aberdeen, NJ/Matawan Regional) would single later in the inning to bring home Mayernik.
Alanna Namit (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) was locked in from the first pitch striking out 13 Cougar batters and not allowing a hit in the shutout, improving to 12-0 on the season. The no-hitter is Namit's fourth of the season, an all-time NCAA Division III record for a freshman. Opponents are hitting just .108 on the season of Namit and that number lowers to .088 in conference play.
In game two, Kean jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a pair of RBI singles. TCNJ halved the lead on a sacrifice fly by
Jess McGuire (Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional).
Following a Cougar insurance run in the fifth, McGuire mashed her team-leading fourth home run of the season to straight away center field. The Lions would tie the game in the seventh on a two-out RBI-single from Conroy.
The Cougars put runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh. Katie Debbie would deliver the walk-off double to earn the split.
TCNJ returns home for a double header against New Jersey City University Tuesday. First pitch is at 3:00 PM.
