Lions Clinch Regular Season Title with Sweep

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey softball team clinched the New Jersey Athletic Conference regular season title and the number one seed in the upcoming NJAC Tournament with a sweep over New Jersey City University Tuesday afternoon. The Lions took both games 8-0 in five innings. TCNJ is 26-6 on the season and 14-2 in the NJAC, while the Gothic Knights are 4-28 overall and 0-16 in conference play.

TCNJ got on the board in third inning of game one courtesy of an RBI-double by Madison Levine (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills). The rally continued when Levine came around to score on a fielding error, then Gaby Bennett (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) produced an RBI-single.

The Lions would tack on four more runs in the fourth with a bevy of extra-base hits. Annalise Suitovsky (Warren Twp., NJ/Watchung Hills) hit a double scoring pinch-runner Francesca Pugliese (Langhorne, PA/Villa Joseph Marie). Megan Mayernik (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) followed with a triple, and Lauren Conroy (Aberdeen, NJ/Matawan Regional) ripped a two-run triple two batters later.

Danielle Carey (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) produced the walk-off in the fifth inning with an RBI-ground out that scored Caroline Muccifori (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown).

In the circle, Alanna Namit (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) was perfect through four and a third before a line drive nicked off the glove of a diving Conroy at third base. Namit would settle for her second one-hitter of the season and 13th win.

In game two, the Lions jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning. Levine and Bennett each hit RBI-triples during the rally and Helena Coppola (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) chipped in a run scoring double.

In the second Allie Immerso (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) hit an infield single and sped all the way around to score on a throwing error.

In the third, Coppola notched her second extra-base hit with a run-scoring triple before Immerso hit another infield single to score Coppola.

The Lions would again walk-off in game two. Suitovsky would hit a sacrifice fly scoring Muccifori to send TCNJ home winners.

Sam Platt (Cedar Grove, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) allowed just a single hit in five innings of work for her third one-hitter of the year.

TCNJ returns home Saturday, when they host Montclair State University at 1:00 PM. The Lions will honor their four graduating seniors at the conclusion of both games.
