Lions Topped by Scarlet Raptors to Halt 11 Game Win Streak

Camden, NJ... The College of New Jersey baseball team's 11 game winning streak was snapped on Thursday by conference opponent Rutgers Camden by a 3-1 final score. The Lions record falls to 12-3 and 2-1 in NJAC play this season, while the Scarlet Raptors improve to 11-5 and 3-0 on the campaign.

The Scarlet Raptors jumped on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, with an RBI sacrifice fly from Matt Yanick. The next would run also be drove in by Yanick, as his base hit in the bottom of the sixth inning made it a 2-0 lead. The Lions had an opportunity to get a run on the board in the top of the seventh as Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) and Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) led off the inning with a base hit each, however the Lions were unable to score either.

Yanick earned another RBI with a base hit in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 3-0 ballgame. The Lions did not give up and loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning. Danny Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro South) led off the inning with a base hit, then Thomas Persichetti (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) worked a walk. Shindler then got on base with a single as he ripped one to the first baseman that took a bad hop to load the bases. After a strikeout and a fly out, Tommy McCarthy (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) worked a walk to drive in a run and keep the Lions alive, yet they were not able to push across the tying run.

Shindler went 2-4 as well as Lindsay, and Borup went 1-4 with a run scored. On the mound was Michael Walley (Yardley PA,Notre Dame) who went the full eight innings and allowed three earned runs while striking out four. The Lions pitching staff has been stingy all season long, as coming into today they had a combined ERA of 2.33 which placed them third in NCAA Division III.

The Lions will complete the home and home against the Scarlet Raptors tomorrow with the first pitch starting at 3:30pm.
