Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey softball team enter's the 2018 NCAA Division III Tournament Regional hungry after falling in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship game Sunday. The 19th-ranked Lions enter the tournament with a 31-8 record. The 31 wins is the most since 2010, when the Lions finished 33-10.
TCNJÂ has been led by strong fundamental play and great team depth. The Lions boast the nation's top team defense with a .985 fielding percentage. The Lions have eight players hitting over .300 on the season led by
Megan Mayernik at .435 and
Lauren Conroy at .429. Conroy was named New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year.
Madison Levine and
Gaby Bennett each recorded their 100th career hits during the season.
Jess McGuire paces the team with five home runs.
Annalise Suitovsky leads the Lions with 23 walks on the year.
In the circle, TCNJ has been led by
Alanna Namit. Namit was named NJAC Pitcher of the Year and twice earned National Pitcher of the Week honors. She became the first freshman in NCAA Division III history to toss four no-hitters in a season and leads the Lions in ERA and Strikeouts. She also leads the country in hits allowed per seven innings.
Sam Platt has been the other key piece to the Lions rotation, finishing the year with a 2.06 ERA and nine victories.
TCNJ opens the home regional against Johnson and Wales University, who enter the tournament with a 31-11 record. The Wildcats punched their ticket to the tournament with a 4-2 win in the GNAC Tournament championship. JWU has a lineup with a trio of players hitting over .400 led by Tiffani Semanchik at .464. Jennifer Corona was the workhorse in the circle pitching more innings than the rest of the staff combined and leading the team in ERA at 1.28. Kristin Frost enters the tournament with an 8-0 record.
The other opening game features Moravian College and Salisbury University. The 11th-ranked Greyhounds enter with a 32-5 record and earned their spot in the tournament with a 3-0 win in the Landmark Tournament Championship. They own the 12th-best team ERA in the country as Josie Novak and Amanda Carisone are a formidable one-two-punch in the circle posting 17-2 and 15-3 records respectively and each own ERAs under 2.00. Brooke Wehr leads the squad with 10 home runs.
The Seagulls also earned an at-large bid after falling in the CAC Championship series two games to one.The Seagulls are more than poised to take advantages of pitching mistakes as they rank 11th in the nation in slugging percentage.Leanne Collins ranks ninth in the country in triples.
Moravian and Salisbury kick off the regional Friday at 12:00 PM with TCNJ and JWU are set for a 2:30 PM first pitch.
