No. 4 Field Hockey Defeats Gwynedd Mercy

Gwynedd, Pa. – The College of New Jersey field hockey team led for a majority of the game, then broke a tie in the 57th minute to secure a 2-1 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University Tuesday night. The fourth ranked Lions improved to 4-1 on the season, while the Griffins dropped to 4-2.

TCNJ now leads the all-time series 8-0 dating back to the 2011 season.

The Lions jumped out to an early lead when Cayla Andrews muscled the ball through a defenders stick in the attacking circle. The ball fell on to the stick of Iris Schuck, who converted the opportunity for her first goal of the season. The Lions took the one goal lead into the half.

The Griffins fought back in the second half. On their first penalty corner of the game, Kaitlyn Lutz tied the score with just over 15 minutes remaining.

The Lions maintained their composure and responded on a penalty corner of their own. Kayla Peterson scored on a blast from the point to give TCNJ the advantage once again.

As time was expiring, the Griffins earned a penalty corner and earned one final chance to tie the game. The shot from the point was wide left to end the contest.

TCNJ maintained a 10-2 shot advantage, including 7-1 in the first half.

The Lions will play their third straight road contest when they travel to sixth ranked Salisbury Saturday. Pushback is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
