MADISON, N.J. – The College of New Jersey men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season against Drew University on Wednesday night by a final score of 4-3. The Lions dropped to 7-1 while the Rangers improved to 6-2.
The Lions got on the board first in the 20
th minute.
Ryan Vazquez continued his hot scoring streak, as he took a feed from
Nick Sample and found the back of the net to make it 1-0. The goal was the 9
th on the season for Vazquez, and the assist from Sample was his fifth of the campaign. The Rangers were able to put three on the board and take a 3-1 lead into the locker room.
Despite trailing by two goals the Lions would not go quietly into the night. In the 75
th minute, Vazquez struck again.
Michael Maltese sent a cross that found the head of Vazquez, and he looped it over the keeper to make it a 3-2 game.
The Lions continued the pressure, searching for the game tying goal.
Ethan Mueller had an opportunity however was denied by the Drew keeper. In the 86
th minute, Vazquez found the back of the net again for the hat trick. There was a scramble in front of the net and Vazquez poked it in to notch the game up at 3-3. In the first overtime, Drew scored nine minutes in with a header off of a corner kick.
In net for the Lions was
Michael Kayal, who tallied five saves including a pair in overtime.
Vazquez continues to terrorize opposing defenses, as he now has 11 goals on the 2018 campaign. Despite the loss the Lions are still off to an excellent start of the 2018 season, and their 7-0 record was the best start for the program since 1994.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when will host Ramapo College for a New Jersey Athletic Conference match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
