EWING, N.J. – The 7
th ranked College of New Jersey women's soccer team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Wednesday night by a final score of 1-0. The Lions pushed their record to 4-1 while the Devils fell to 6-1-1.
In the first half neither team was able to crack the scoreboard. The Lions had their fair share of chances, as they outshot the Devils 11-1 in the opening stanza.
Jess Hall had a look with just over two minutes to play but the Devils' keeper came up with the save.
The second period the Lions continued to rattle off shots on the Devils defense. The Lions defensive back line of
Jen McGrogan,
Ally DeRiggi, and
Faith Eichenour kept the attack at bay, as the Devils only tallied one shot on the game.
In the 85
th minute, the Lions broke through.
Julia Obst controlled a goal kick then got around the challenging Devils defender. She sent a beautiful cross from the left sideline that found
Alexa Pestritto, and Pestritto snuck it in on the left side of the goal to put the Lions out in front. The final minute the Lions continued to control the pace of the game to hang onto the victory.
The goal was the first of the 2018 season for Pestritto and the fifth on her career. In net
Alexandra Panasuk came on in relief of
Nicole DiPasquale, and Panasuk earned her first career victory.
The Lions outshot the Devils 19-1 and held a 2-1 edge on corner kicks.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when they will travel to Ramapo College for a New Jersey Athletic Conference match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
