EWING, N.J. – The third ranked College of New Jersey women's soccer team defeated Penn State Berks in the 2018 home opener Wednesday night by a final score of 2-0. With the win the Lions improved to 2-0 and Penn State Berks fell to 0-1 on the young season.
Right off of the bat the Lions had an excellent scoring opportunity. Just one minute in
Taylor Nolan took a shot that banged off of the left post. The Lions attacked the Penn State defense and saw another shot carom off of the left post, this time sent in by
Randi Smith. In the first half the Lions outshot Penn State Berks by a 12-2 margin, yet neither side was able to crack the scoring column in the opening period.
Nicole DiPasquale came up with a save in the 41st minute to keep it deadlocked at zero.
In the second half the Lions kept the foot on the gas pedal, and put one on the board in the 66th minute. Smith sent in a corner kick that bounced around off of a couple of defenders, and Nolan punched in a header to make it 1-0. 14 minutes later the Lions struck in similar fashion.
Haley Bodden delivered a header from a corner kick sent in by
Ally Weaver that found the back of the net. The two goal lead held up to be enough as the Lions came up with their second win of the campaign.
The back line of
Jen McGrogan,
Ally DeRiggi, and
Faith Eichenour stifled the Penn State Berks offense, as the Lions only surrendered three shots. The corner kick battle was in favor of the Lions 12-0. DiPasquale earned the win in net and pitched the shutout.
TCNJ will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 9 when they will travel to Moravian College for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
