UNION, N.J. – The College of New Jersey women's basketball team was defeated by Kean University in conference action on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 68-58.
TCNJ (8-7, 7-2 NJAC) began the game with an 8-0 run.
Sam Famulare knocked down a three-pointer, then
Shannon Devitt scored from in close with a lay-up.
Jen Byrne was able to convert on a lay-up to make it an eight point advantage with just under five to play in the first.
Kean picked up a two point lead in the second quarter, yet the Lions closed out the half on a 10-3 run.
Lauren Barlow scored on a lay in to give TCNJ the lead, then Devitt scored from in close to make it 27-24. With under a minute to go in the first,
Kate O'Leary hit a lay-up and was fouled and converted the free throw to make it 31-24 TCNJ.
In the second half, the Cougars would come back and take the lead at the end of the third quarter. Famulare knocked down a trifecta with 14 seconds left in the third to cut the margin to 48-45.
O'Leary scored on another and-one in the fourth, as she came up with the steal on the defensive end then hit the lay-up and the free throw to tie it up at 53 all. The Cougars were up by eight with two and a half to go, and Byrne knocked down a three-pointer. The rest of the game was controlled by Kean as they were able to pull out the victory.
Devitt posted another double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Byrne scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Famulare tallied eight points on the afternoon to go with six boards.
The Lions will return to the hardwood on Jan. 16, when they will welcome Stockton University to Packer Hall at 6:00 p.m.
