EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's soccer team defeated Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC match on Wednesday by a final tally of 2-0. TCNJ improved its record to 9-2-1 including 1-1-1 in conference play while Rutgers-Camden slipped to 8-3-1 and 1-1-1 in the NJAC.
In the first half, the Lions scored first in the 30
th minute when
Dante Bettino punched in a header.
Luke Yates sent in a long throw in from the left sideline, and the ball found Bettino on a bounce. Bettino tapped in the header just under the crossbar to make it a 1-0 lead, and the goal was his fourth of the campaign.
Rutgers-Camden had a shot on net in the 35
th minute, yet TCNJ keeper
Daniel Mecadon came up with the save. Mecadon denied another look in the 38
th minute to keep the zero on the board.
A monsoon broke out right as the second half started, however it did not derail the Lions. In the 69
th minute,
Justin Dominique was fouled inside of the box by the Rutgers-Camden keeper. Dominique was set up by a nice play from Bettino. He intercepted the pass going to the sideline, and centered in to Dominique.
Michael Maltese punched it the penalty kick to extend the advantage to 2-0. The goal was the third of the season for Maltese.
The TCNJ defensive unit was able to control the rest of the game to hold onto the win. The Lions out-shot the Scarlet Raptors 16-15 on the evening. Mecadon picked up six saves on the night to earn his third shutout of the year.
TCNJ returns to action on Oct.5 against William Paterson at home. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
